歲時節日是日常生活因應氣候、生態變化而自然生成的「非常」節點，猶如隆起的竹節將平滑的竹桿分隔成段，竹節形成了表面的結構變化，節日也以異於平日常規的活動或儀式，調節了一年四季。以漢人文化而言，一年當中，有特定民俗行事的日子，包含了陰╱陽曆的節日、節氣，以及未形成節日名稱但有約定俗成的相對應民俗的日子（如伏日作醬、人日食七菜羹），漢語通稱為「歲時民俗」、日本語則稱之為「年中行事」。節日由於經常結合信仰（如端午的插青、七夕的七娘媽、中秋賞月），在傳說方面十分豐富，因而人們耳熟能詳的都是對人、事的紀念故事，人文色彩濃厚。然而以年為循環的歲時民俗畢竟和四季流轉關係密切。在同一個環境中，人與自然界的其他生物、非生物之間為了共存而產生的交互作用，必定也在歲時民俗的思維中占據相當重要性，甚至很可能決定了歲時民俗的產生或是樣態。這一層面相對的較少有學者關注，本專輯因此以「歲時民俗與自然生態」為主題，探索自然環境、動植物生態對歲時節日的形成、發展與變化的影響，以期與過往偏重人文層面的歲時研究作一對照，並且擴展歲時民俗的跨領域研究。
