Abstract
Beginning during the Ming and Qing dynasties, domestic Buddhist
ritual life came to be been influenced by two trends: the secularization of
Buddhist ritual activities and the milieu of “domesticated religiosity.”
Traditionally, research on domestic Buddhist ritual life has mainly focused on
its spiritual connotations and religious significance while neglecting its
material manifestations. This study draws on 67 examples of mantra paintings
(31 types) collected by the author to delve into the nomenclature, functions,
usages, origins, and classifications of these artworks. Its goal is to provide
a new perspective for understanding the practice of Buddhist rituals in family
life, thereby enriching our knowledge of domestic Buddhist activities during
the Ming-Qing era.
