The Journal of Chinese Ritual, Theatre and Folklore (Min-su chū-i 民俗曲藝) invites proposals for a special issue on Chinese Buddhist Ritual. Contributions might cover the historical evolution of Chinese Buddhist rites (relying upon textual evidence), or else explore their contemporary practice (employing an anthropological field-work perspective). Papers that explore the possible connections between the Buddhist and the Daoist ritual traditions are especially welcome, as are studies on folk Buddhist ritual masters (民間佛教法師) belonging to such ritual traditions as the Pu’an Sect 普庵教and the so-called “Religion of the Ācāryas” (阿吒力教). The special issue is particularly interested in papers that explore the relation between Buddhist rituals as practiced by monks (and nuns) and Buddhist rituals as practiced by lay Buddhist ritual masters (俗家佛教法師), such as the Taiwanese funerary specialists of the “Śākyamuni Religion” (釋教), and the Guangdong “Incense and Flower Monks” (香花和尚).
This special issue on “Chinese Buddhist Ritual” will be edited by Dr. Hsieh Shu-wei (Professor, Graduate Institute of Religious Studies, Chengchi University) and Dr. Meir Shahar (Professor, Department of East Asian Studies, Tel Aviv University). The Journal invites potential contributors to submit abstracts, either in Chinese (up to 500 words) or English (up to 300 words), to the Editorial Board at shihhoch@ms6.hinet.net by July 31, 2025. Selected contributors will be required to submit full papers by December 31, 2025. For more details on the submission process, including our style requirements, please refer to Information for Authors at https://www.shihhochengfoundation.org/style-guide.html.
