對一般大眾而言，認知中的「年畫」較偏向狹義的年畫，大概就是門神一類過年時貼在門上、牆上的版畫。至於除了過年之外，因應其他的節日販售的民俗版畫（如端午節的天師鎮五毒、中秋節的月光碼兒等等），以及日常祭祀用的紙馬（或謂甲馬、神碼）、戲曲小說故事版畫、乃至於時事、勸善、諷諭等等題材的版畫，則與年畫同屬「民俗版畫」的範疇。
