All papers in this issue
were originally presented at a conference on “The Emergence of a Temple-Centric
Society” that I organized in the context of David Faure’s project on The
Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society. Put simply, the goal of the
conference was to test the hypothesis that local Chinese society from the Song
on came to center on the temples, gods, and festivals of popular religion.
