Professor Overmyer was a pioneer in the studies of Chinese popular religion in the English world. His research is effectively summarized by the titles of the monographs that he authored:1) Folk Buddhist Religion: Dissenting Sects in Late Traditional China, 2) The Flying Phoenix: Aspects of Chinese Sectarianism in Taiwan, 3) Precious Volumes: An Introduction to Chinese Sectarian Scriptures from the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, and 4) Local Religion in North China in the Twentieth Century: The Structure and Organization of Community Rituals and Beliefs. Through the four subjects, mutually pertaining to each other, he expertly illustrated the complexity and inner logic of Chinese popular religion. The four books alone with the volume he edited, Ethnography in China Today: A Critical Assessment of Methods and Results, embody his research methodology of utilizing historical records, religious texts, and fieldwork. The study of popular religion requires textual analysis, complimented by field observations of belief in practice.

In 2010, Professor Overmyer edited the special issue on "Women in Chinese Religions” for the Journal of Ritual, Theatre and Folklore. He had long noticed the importance of religion in Chinese women and vice versa before then. His 1981 article, “Alternatives: Popular Religious Sects in Chinese Society,” already points out that in popular religion Chinese women had an alternative role of leaders in the public space. His approach also suggests that religion can offer an alternative paradigm for studying women’s history.

In November 2021, Professor Overmyer passed away. The Journal of Ritual, Theatre and Folklore is planning a special issue in honor of his contributions to the Journal and to the field of Chinese religion. The special issue is edited by Shin-yi Chao (University of Rochester) and Wang Chien-chuan (Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology). We invite paper proposals on subjects including, but not limited to, sectarianism, “precious volumes” (baojuan), spirit writings, and local religion and village society across the Sinophone world. We seek original research with an emphasis on religion in practice.

Please first submit the title and abstract of your proposed paper, approximately 500 words, to the Journal of Ritual, Theatre and Folklore (shihhoch@ms6.hinet.net) by April 10, 2022. Please include your name, email address, mailing address and phone number. Once the abstract is accepted, the complete paper will be due on September 30, 2022, for a double-blind review process. More details can be found in the Submission Guidelines” on “Ritual, Theatre and Folklore” website ( https://ritualtheatreandfolkloreat.blogspot.com/ ).

他的主要研究領域非常清楚的表現在他的四部研究專書: Folk Buddhist Religion: Dissenting Sects in Late Traditional China (中譯書名: 中國民間宗教教派研究), The Flying Phoenix: Aspects of Chinese Sectarianism in Taiwan (中譯書名: 飛鸞:中國民間教派面面觀), Precious Volumes: An Introduction to Chinese Sectarian Scriptures from the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (中譯書名: 寶卷1617世紀中國宗教經卷導論), Local Religion in North China in the Twentieth Century: The Structure and Organization of Community Rituals and Beliefs (中譯書名: 中國北方農村社會的民間信仰)。 Ethnography in China Today: A Critical Assessment of Methods and Results

(Associate Professor of Religion, University of Rochester)
