近幾年來，臺灣與國際間關於瑤族宗教與文化的研究動能不斷湧現，並由此產生出許多具體的研究成果。「瑤族宗教與文化研究的新典範」兩期專輯為的便是回應這股國際瑤學研究的浪潮，對此前的研究進行回顧總結，對當前的研究進行綜觀分析，並對未來的研究進行方向建議。職是之故，本前言首先將從學術史的角度爬梳「瑤學」近半世紀以來主要的典範移轉，並提供臺灣在瑤族研究上的本土視野。接着針對當前國際間對瑤族手抄本和宗教文物風起雲湧的數位化和主題研究計畫進行回顧，作為讀者認識本專輯中多位作者處理館藏與數位化手抄本的背景知識。最後藉由回顧本專輯收錄的六篇由新生代瑤學研究者所撰寫的研究論文，對瑤族宗教與文化的研究提出創見與展望。
