Abstract
During the Ming dynasty, Tang tales (much like Tang poetry) were
widely emulated, selected, edited, and discussed. The rise of printing and
publishing during the Ming led to a rapid growth in the compilation and
publication of the Tang tales, resulting in their widespread circulation. This
article attempts to explore editorial strategies and commentaries on the Tang
tales in the following Ming anthologies: Yuchuzhi 虞初志, Xu Yuchuzhi 續虞初志, and Guang Yuchuzhi
Firstly, it explores the selection of the text of Tang tales
in the Yuchu 虞初 series
and how they are interrelated. Secondly, it analyzes the distinctions between
the Yuchu series and the Tan edition of the Taiping guangji 太平廣記 in terms of titles, authors, and textual content, shedding
light on these differences among versions. Finally, it delves into the preface
and commentaries of the Yuchu series, particularly the Lin edition
Yuchuzhi, which compiles famous literati’s prefaces and commentaries, in
order to expound on the profound implications and present the reception and
canonization of Tang tales in the Ming dynasty.
