武雅士教授的研究橫跨臺灣歷史人口與宗教民俗。歷史人口研究材料主要利用日治時期臺灣戶口調查簿、及臨時戶口╱國勢調查等日治政府行政檔案。國際人口學界普遍認同，臺灣日治政府的戶口調查簿、以及臨時戶口╱國勢調查行政檔案的準確程度，非比尋常，可能是全世界最正確的歷史人口研究材料。武雅士教授五十年來利用上述檔案完成非常重要的臺灣民俗研究，而近年來許多新興的臺灣民俗議題持續出現，包括族群關係、姓氏選擇、居住選擇、家庭關係等，當代學者是否利用這批珍貴的歷史人口材料，得到更多新的發現？這些發現又對臺灣民俗研究帶出什麼更寬廣的視界？本專輯邀請當代學者利用日治時期歷史人口材料研究，期能提出臺灣民俗研究的新成果，提升臺灣民俗研究新視野，以紀念武雅士教授。
