Abstract

In this paper, I analyze forty-eight postcards collected in northern Thailand and Laos that indicate exoticism, eroticism, and drugs reflected on the image of non-Tai hill tribes. The implicit attractive core through contacting touristic media has been planted in the minds of people. Exoticism, eroticism, and drugs are not merely parts of history but presentation of today's tribe reality. Through imagination of tourists, alien custom and nudity among tribal people must be popularized in historical time. Also opium was a sort of daily food in the past. Tourists who have bought those postcards assume ownership of "history under the present moment." "history" and "now" are brought together in the hands and eyes of tourists who have owned postcards.
The manufacturers of postcards, and their buyers and watchers share an inner coding structure. Whenever a new tourist prepares to depart for a particular spot shown on a postcard, it means that the generating marker is bringing one to visit "history." And an exacting experience is ready to appear in the near future.
