Special
Issue on "The Religious Cultures of Southwest China" — Part I
Paul
R. Katz. “Introduction.” Journal
of Chinese Ritual, Theatre and Folklore 187 (2015.3): 1-31.
This
double issue of our Journal explores the diverse religious cultures that thrive
in Southwest China, as well as the complex range of factors that have
contributed to their development. These themes are also closely related to my
Academia Sinica Investigator Award project (中央研究院深耕計畫) on the modern religious history
of Western Hunan (Xiangxi湘西), yet expand its geographic scope to cover other areas of
Southwest China. This project has focused on two main questions. First, it
reassesses the analytical framework of Michel Strickmann, who in his classic
article “The Tao among the Yao ”
(which inspired this project’s title) asked whether non-Han peoples have
preserved earlier forms of Daoism known to have been practiced by Han Chinese
but not existing among them anymore. Second, it explores the problem of change
during the past century, including which of Western Hunan’s religious
traditions have been transformed, which have persisted relatively unchanged,
and what all this reveals about the fate of religion in modern China . In order
to address these issues, my colleagues and I have done long-term research on
the historical development of local temples, the different types of ritual
specialists found in this region, the importance of judicial rituals and their
links to local governance, and the significance of female deities and
specialists. The articles in this double issue address many of these topics.

of Chinese Ritual, Theatre and Folklore 187 (2015.3): 33-44.
