任何一個地方都經常舉行祭典,若是問其鄉人所得到的印象為何?就會隨着個人的接觸面而有不同的答案,學者雖則企圖進行整體的觀察,但是否真能獲得完整的圖像,其答案並不十分確定!主要在每個人的觀察角度各有偏重,所獲致的真實印象也就各有異趣,尤其漢人與非漢社會的文化交流,在實踐中都會發生複雜的「複合」現象,因而各自形成其在地的內容、形式。這就像語言的運用,每一民族所使用的語言雖然豐富多樣,卻都遵循一定的創造原理,因而維繫語言具有生生不息的活力。漢人社會的祭典經常同時出現諸種專家,在競合關係中造就一種地方傳統,尤其漢人與非漢社會間的文化交流,這些專家儒、釋、道、法(巫)俱有,彼此競爭而表現其空間佔有,所形成的「複合」圖像,即各自堅持其教義傳統,卻也可融入整體的地方文化中,經久之後即各自具有地方特色。學者的調查研究難免各有所好,卻也需詮釋如何被複合,凡此均需從外表的跡象深入其文化內層。
